Forces of Nature

Source

This is not meant to be a Force that will come into play, rather this is just an explanation of the root of the Forces - where they come from.

In the DCU there has long been The Source - or what is known in every facet of the universe as the source of all things. God, a god, the root of even that, it is the guiding presence that has crafted all things in all realities. It is guarded by The Source Wall, a massive stony barrier that prevents anything from passing through - as not even the likes of Superman or Darkseid can crack it. Those that seek to break the Source wall are often imprisoned upon it, building on the outer layer of the Wall with statue-like casings of themselves that then block/prevent approach to the Wall itself.

This is the origin of the Forces (and well, pretty much everything else in existence). In theory, by controlling all of the individual Forces it might be possible to enter the Source and command it - YET this is meant to be nothing more than a threat, and I guarantee this will never happen on BnB. :)

Unbound

The first of the Forces, this is the Force of Air, or what's classically seen as the Wind Element. Essentially, this is the starting point or the open field to build upon to get to the other Forces. Thus, this is the root of energy itself - that which cannot be destroyed, only altered in form/application. Thus the name for the Force, in that this is the most raw of all of the Forces, and that which cannot be bound truly in any way, just harnessed enough to be used in some ways.

The Unbound oversees all of the air/wind, as well as represents the absence of it (such as the empty vastness of space). It guides the winds, shapes tornadoes; it is the driving force behind the passage of energy, and so on. Those with wind/air-based powers or raw energy powers (or those that are granted their powers from energy sources) likely fit here best.

Examples of champions/avatars here would be Red Tornado and Superman.

This has recently been seen in RP with the disturbances across the Midwest of the USA, with the increased wind activity there, as well as the outburst by Red Tornado in Metropolis.

Ungiving

The second of the Forces, this is the Force of Rock, or what's classically seen as the Earth Element. With the vastness of the Unbound, there needed to be a foundation - something solid placed there for other creations/Forces to stand/operate on and thus the formation of solid matter. This is at the heart of the Ungiving, as it is the source of sheer might, strength of substance as well as of belief - making this is the spiritual guide to mythological belief. This is the fortitude or structure upon which other things are built, thus the name of the Ungiving - which is ironic for the Force, as this is typically the most abused (and willing to take it).

The Ungiving oversees all of the rock/soil/ground, from the smallest pebble to molten lava to the largest mountains, as well as being the guide for mythological wonder and sentiments of mythological attachment. It helps to push the continents, monitor volcanoes, and yes, even give a collective mind to all of the stones in existence.

Examples of the champions/avatars here would be Sand, Wonder Woman, Geo-Force and Captain Marvel.

This has recently been seen in RP with some undersea stuff with Atlantis and the Lava Trolls, as well as the weeping statues on Easter Island.

Consumed

The third of the Forces, this is the Force of Fire, or what's classically seen as the (you guessed it!) the Fire Element. With the energy there and then the substance, then came the process of giving it shape, to mold that matter into things - forging it. With this spark, one of sheer creativity thus became the Force. It is the Force used to work things, to mold matter and it is the energy of that which takes the shape of the flame. It also serves as the Force of heat, that which brought warmth to the lands (setting the stage/conditions for the creation of something else - life).

The Consumed oversees all of the aspects of flame/fire/heat as well as matter/substance, along with the spirit of creation. It is the inspiration, the spark of invention as well as the control for fire, and the guide for the shaping of matter into things, deciding what molecules become what.

Examples of the champions/avatars here would be Firestorm and Green Lantern.

This has recently been seen in the uncontrollable creativity in Kyle/Green Lantern, as well as having aspects of play in the Gangs of Philadelphia, and even events at work in the reaches of space.

Continual

The fourth of the Forces, this is the Force of Time, or what's classically been known as the time continuum. With energy, substance and then shape being given to the nature of things, next comes the element of defining it - the classification of what would become what, what it would do and how long it would last. At the root of this is the founding of science. This Force helped to classify things into categories, names, species as well as timelines, to give nature a logical progression.

The Continual oversees all the aspects of the rules of science, the structures of physics mostly, as well as governing the control of time itself. It allows for manipulation of speed, of transference of time as well as between timelines, and keeps it all in structural order. This is commonly monitored by the Linear Men, cosmic individuals that watch over the Timestream, or even the Speed Force that empowers the Speedsters.

Examples of the champion/avatars here would be The Atom and The Flash.

Recently, this Force hasn't come much into play - but shall be a great deal soon. It is habitually seen among all the Speedsters.

Clear

The fifth of the Forces, this is the Force of Water, or what's classically been known as ... well, obviously, the water force. With energy, substance, shape and then order, thus came the last element needed to support life - water. This is the Force that helped to cool the fires, to help mold the lands, to give support to all of the Forces before it, as a kind of clarity (and thus the name). but also with the merger of all of those aspects combined with the power of water, the source for the first sparks of magic formed, and thus The Clear also serves as a guiding aspect for the workings of the arcane.

The Clear oversees all marine life, the minds of all things that are connected to water of any nature. It is the voice of reason for rivers, lakes, oceans and even puddles, any amount of water and the life within it. Not really a guiding mind for magic, however (as that is done by the Lords of Order and Chaos - something else, that took control and shaped the power), it is the pool from which such a source for such a thing is tapped.

Examples of the champion/avatars here would be Aquaman or Dr. Fate, most any of the Aquas or Sentinels of Magic.

Recently this has been seen with much of the stuff surrounding the return of Aquaman, as well as play in events in San Francisco with the SoM.

Seeing

The sixth of the Forces, this is the Force of Mind, or what has classically been referred to in comics as the astral plane. This is the collective of consciousness, the formation of thought, the binding of awareness, all before life was created. Why? Because what is life without thought, without a mind or consciousness to guide it? In that aspect, this Force empowers the notion of dreaming, to have the ethereal hope in place for life to kind of tap into, to access as a kind of guiding subtle thought. It is also the building Force of knowledge, the library of what has been thought, shared and expressed by the minds it feeds and is tapped into, as a kind of ever-increasing archive of ideas.

The Seeing oversees all aspects of the mind, governing all mental powers expressed in people/things, such as telepathy or even telekinesis, empathy, psychometrics, etc. For those with such powers, this is the Force that such abilities stem from. It is also a control for the collection of ideas, being itself a warehouse of thought. But it is also the pool of subconscious thought that feeds dreams, accessible through the Endless Dreams domain, The Dreaming.

Examples of the champions/avatars here would be Martian Manhunter, Jemm of Saturn, Faith, Omen or perhaps even Oracle.

Recently this has been seen only by those sensitive to such a thing, as for a long, long, long time the Force itself has been asleep and has only just now begun to wake up.

Green

The seventh of the Forces, this if the Force of Plants, or what is classically known as the plant mind. In many ways, this is most often the easiest force for those that I try to explain such ideas to. ;) Maybe because it is the one that is among the most established in the DCU and for the longest time, along with The Red (to be explained next). But this Force is the collective consciousness of all plant life, being the single mind that all plants tap into and share, with nexus or root node on each planet, then interconnecting to all others throughout the cosmos. In that aspect, this is the foundation for the notion of community, of a coming together notion that has helped to spawn an interconnectivity of life on planets to even the formation of societies and communities.

The Green oversees all plant life, from a single blade of grass to a redwood tree to a whole forest or jungle, being the mind that connects all of these beings to one unified mind. This is among the most direct of the Forces, empowering select individuals to represent it and its needs, such as Swamp Thing, Poison Ivy and Solomon Grundy. In a much more indirect way, it helps to fuel the notion of community, not something it directly guides, but often those most in tune with nature come to embrace just as it does.

Examples of champion/avatars here would be Swamp Thing (plant) and Green Arrow (community).

Recently, nothing overt has really been done with The Green, as it is among the most frequent already at play in the DCU. But expect big things soon.

Red

The eighth of the Forces, this is the Force of Animals, or what is classically known as the animal mind. Often, this too is among the easiest to explain as it is already been detailed a great deal in the DCU, most abundantly in the Animal Man series from Vertigo. This is the collective mind of all animal life on the planet, from insects to elephants to turtles to birds to dolphins to lizards, and so on. Aptly named The Red, it is also the most aggressive of the Forces, often being the most willing to turn to violence - since most often violence is either turned against animals or is already a necessity in the wild. It also represents the notion of blood, the driving instinctual aspect to life, and thus the aspect of spirit (not to be confused with soul).

The Red oversees all animals, being a raging pool of the minds of all the beasts of the planet, including even those governed by The Clear. A teeming wildness, it seeks ways to protect animal life - and increasing problem with the expansion of mankind (which is a part of the Red, but often not represented). Connecting to it, individuals have been able to access animalistic powers or control (certain) beasts. But it also serves as a governing control for the passage of spirits, or even as a holding pen for others (seen most with Hawkman).

Examples of the champions/avatars here would be Animal Man, Vixen, Cheetah and Hawkman.

Recently, nothing overt has really been done with The Red, as it is among the most frequent already at play in the DCU. But expect big things soon.

Knowing

The ninth and final Force, this is the Force of Conscience, or what is classically known as the knowledge of right from wrong. With all of life brought together, now finally there was to be a governing Force to help put it all into a logical, self-sustaining order. Without it? Chaos might descend, life would destroy itself and be gone, and thus a necessity for ultimately the triumph of good to win out, to endure. In that, this embraces the aspect of will, the survivalist attachment of self. This is the nagging notion in the back of your mind to remind you that stealing is wrong, or even at times that if it truly needs to be done... it is the aspect of the greater good and thus the foundation not for law, but for justice.

The Knowing is the most indirect of all of the Forces. Being what it is, it need not have a direct hand in things, but rather it -should- remain back and mostly observe what transpires, like some kind of jury or even a judge, acting only when it ultimately must. It doesn't really empower people, though only at extreme times might it seek to shape events or situations, to ensure what it requires be met out.

Examples of champions/avatars here would be Batman, or even those like Vigilante (the modern one) and perhaps Deathstroke.

Recently, little has been seen of The Knowing, those its indirect work has bee out there - such as the motivation for The Thinker to leave the service of the JSA, or Harvey Dents recent return to being Two-Face.
